Miches..-Several families of the municipality Miches, El Seibo province (east), said they were stripped of around 56.7 million square meters of inherited lands by a foreign investor and his lawyer, for which they asked that the authorities take action to prevent another tragedy such as the recent shootout in which five people died.
In letter sent to newspaper Hoy, they affirm that the action against them stems from an alleged certificate of deed dated 1987, issued to the Soñe family.
They say the Soñes acknowledge that they are in fact the land’s owners and have said as much to the foreign mogul’s attorney.
The missive is signed by Agustina, Juan, Dorka and Luisa Amparo, Elsa, Fátima and Clara de la Cruz, Fátima Alvarez, Antolín Berroa, Arturo Rosario, Melania Paredes and Laya Sedier.
They affirm that documents in the State Attorney’s archives show a clear ownership of the land, which has also been proven in the El Seibo Court of Original Jurisdiction.
They affirm that 200 families face uncertainty over the lands they’ve occupied for more than 90 years “ peacefully and uninterruptedly” along a strip of Costa Emeralda beach, in the community Punta de Rey, Miches.
They say they don’t oppose tourism development in Miches, but demand redress, since their lands including coconut plantations and other fruit trees that were their source of income have been destroyed to build the highway.
The tragedy
Recently five people died during a confrontation in dispute over lands in the community La Lisa, of Miches.
The families demand that the authorities proceed to prevent a repeat, and affirm that “a Macondo could be unleashed” if the problem isn’t solved. publish by Dominican Today.- 2009
