Experts aim to rescue Miches’ threatened Laguna Limon

Santo Domingo.- Miches Defense and Development Foundation president Antoliano Peralta said the lagoon Limon is under a grave threat and could disappear because of a grass called Hydrilla. “It’s so alarming that we have to draw the attention of the authorities and of public opinion.”
He said the Foundation will host a discussion in the bookstore Thesaurus at 6 p.m. today Wednesday, with the participation of the Cisneros Foundation and other entities, including the village locals fear the disappearance of fishing and of the important water source.
Also slated to participate is Columbia University researcher doctor James Danef-Burg, who spent more than one year studying the problem and suggested the release of fresh water carp in the lagoon.
Hydrilla grows up to 5 centimeter per day and has formed a compacted slime covering the lake surface; has harmed its biodiversity; eliminated native plants and fish, and disabled navigation.
The carp would exert a biological control function by eliminating the invading plant, although biologists and the Environment Ministry not yet to agree on the proposed solutions. published by Diario Libre.com
